American Cancer Society

Global Leader in Cancer Research

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. For more than 60 years, ACS has led the way in cancer research.

The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, not-for-profit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Since 1946, the Society has invested about $3.4 billion in cancer research. The research program consists of 3 components: extramural grants, intramural epidemiology and surveillance research, and the intramural behavioral research center.
