Helping Disadvantaged Youth Nationwide

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2001 by members of the Ripken family in memory of their patriarch Cal, Sr. It works to create baseball and softball programs and facilities that positively impact disadvantaged youth by combining the principles represented by the Ripken name, the power of Cal, Jr. as a modern day hero and role model, and the universal appeal of baseball. It strives to provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences that use the magic of the big leagues to inspire kids to be the best that they can be…to dream a dream that someday they can achieve great things.

Foundation Programs

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation uses the ball field as our vehicle to grab kid’s attention and help them realize that they have the ability to dream big and accomplish great things. Programs are designed to excite and inspire kids to be active, healthy and discover their great potential.

Healthy Choices, Healthy Children is a comprehensive character education curriculum that can be delivered in various settings. HCHC includes 12 vital life lessons on teamwork, leadership, personal responsibility, work ethic, respect, and other ways in which youth can make good life choices. HCHC is also incorporated into Badges for Baseball and the Play Ball Program.

Badges for Baseball is a community crime prevention program that uses the ball field to build relationships between youth and law enforcement while teaching the basics of the game and life.

Play Ball Program incorporates baseball and softball, youth clinics, coaching clinics, character development, and more! We work to provide opportunities for youth organizations to integrate an on-field component that is fun, gets kids moving, and helps to build skills and confidence, along with an off-field curriculum that teaches young people how to make good decisions.

Staff Trainings and Grants provided by the Foundation range from curriculum implementation to on-the-field coaching as well as necessary equipment and materials to implement a high quality program. Equipment and materials include Healthy Choices, Healthy Children; baseball and softball equipment; and Quickball, an indoor/outdoor form of baseball designed to keep kids interested and active while stressing teamwork and sportsmanship.

Summer Youth Experiences give youth participating in our programs the opportunity to use professional equipment and uniforms, play in a state of the art ballpark, make friends facing similar life challenges in other communities, participate in interactive character education programming, and learn exercise routines that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
